Uvuloplasty or Uvulopalatoplasty is an operation during which part of the soft palate and tongue are removed (in some cases, the latter is only slightly cut). Thanks to these surgical procedures, two effects are achieved:

  • The soft palate is shortened, so the airways are narrowed less by its free edge;
  • The scars at the site of incision make the palate denser, so the soft tissues vibrate less under the influence of a jet of air.

Thus, the goal is achieved: vibration of the soft palate (snoring) is gone since there are no obstacles to the passage of air. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia in a hospital setting. It lasts for about an hour, after which at least a day will be needed for medical staff supervision. Full recovery takes approximately 7-10 days.

Laser uvuloplasty involves similar manipulations, but instead of a scalpel, a laser is used that not only removes excess tissue but also seals the wound. This provides such benefits: blood loss is reduced; operation time is reduced; the postoperative period is less painful; reduced risk of inflammation in the area of surgical incisions.

The main advantages of this method are the absence of burns and necrosis of the edges of the surgical wound; minimal blood loss, as the vessels are sealed instantly; less risk of gross scars.

In the presence of frequent episodes of APNEA (respiratory arrest during sleep), it can be used as one of the stages of complex treatment using CPAP therapy (creating increased air pressure on the inspiration using a special device).

Postoperative period at home and recommendations:

You must adhere to and follow the doctor’s recommendations since the greatest number of complications occurs at home. The necessary medication therapy is usually prescribed individually for each patient at discharge. The most dangerous periods after tonsillectomy are 2-3 and 9-11 days. For 14 days after surgery, you must completely exclude physical activity, overheating, taking baths, and eating hot food.

You can: take a slightly warm shower, go for a walk, breathe air.

You can not: take a bath, play sports for 1 month after surgery, eat and drink hot substances.
